The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), home of the LEED certification system, is accepting applications for the 2009 USGBC Young Leader Awards.  The awards are open to teens and young adults between the ages of 13 and 25 that have led sustainable changes in their schools and communities.

Applications will be accepted until 11:59 PM EDT on August 1, 2009.  Five youth leaders will ultimately be chosen as the recipients of the 2009 USGBC Young Leaders Awards.  The winners will receive an all-expense paid trip to Greenbuild 2009 in November as well as an all-expense paid trip to the Speak Green Festival in April 2010.

The winners will also work with the Youth Speaks Green Team.  “Youth Speaks is a non-profit committed to shifting the perception of youth by combating illiteracy, alienation and silence and by creating a global movement of young people brave enough to take their voices to the stage.”  Source: USGBC

Interested parties will need to complete a two-part application: a written application and a video submission.  The USGBC Young Leader Awards written application (PDF) includes a section for basic contact information as well as three questions that must be answered using 150 words or less.  One of the questions asks applicants to cite a piece of literature that has made a significant impact on them.

The video submission is limited to two minutes and entrants will be judged on their motivation, longevity of commitment, future vision, influence, and community outreach.

For more information, visit the USGBC Young Leader Awards website.
