I’ve blown New Year’s resolutions before, but never as spectacularly as I did this year when I pledged to only spend my money locally. It seemed simple: Choose local bookstores over Amazon, locally operated shops over Target and local restaurants over chains.

This economy has wreaked havoc on many small and locally owned businesses. However, local non-chain stores pump more money back into the economy than large regional and national chains. The 3/50 Project is encouraging you to help stimulate your local economy by shopping local.
Let’s have a show of hands. How many of you try to eat locally grown food? OK — that’s a pretty good number. How many keep your money in local banks? Hmmm — not too many. Now, whose 401K is invested in local companies? Anybody? … Anybody?
