The Sustainable Brew
Today's mantra across is to go green and maintain a sense of ecological balance. The realization to protect all that we have has dawned upon us and it is only natural for all of us to do our bit. If we dig deep, we realize that changes, however big or small contributes to the overarching thought and we must embrace this. Here's a story about a coffee house making those small changes and a big one in doing its bit for the planet.
Dunkin Donuts has been freshly brewing America's favourite coffee for over 60 years. The steps taken to ensure quality excellence are followed strictly across all outlets maintaining synergy. This all day stop for coffee and baked good outlet ensures you get the same aromatic indulgence at all Dunkin donut experiences.
Dunkin has made saving the planet a part of their regular business. Their innovative recycling programs like worm casting has helped fuel this green initiative. By making small changes, they have been able to contribute significantly. Take for instance their reusable mug program. They reward all customers with a discount if they bring their own reusable mug which helps reduce paper cups leading to less cutting away trees. Also, your refills earn a discount too.
Foam cups are used by most coffee shops. But the material used in manufacturing these cups is not renewable. So Dunkin switched to paper cups specially made from renewable resources rather than foam cups. For all those who take away their meals, bags are made from paper rather than plastic. Dine-in guests are given reusable trays too instead of the plastic disposable ones.
And of course, a reward for the energy conscious customers. Special parking spots for car poolers and hybrid owners are allocated to give you the benefit over others and also spark a sense of consciousness among everybody. There is also a special electric car charging station.
And the big one
Supporting these small initiatives is a high impact conscious change. Dunkin donuts corporate provides its support to their franchisees and help them adopt more sustainable operational practices. In fact one of its franchises in St. Petersburg was certified silver under the LEED program for being a complete green store. This restaurant is built in the Dunkin Donuts flagship model design with the inclusion of sustainable procedures. Where ever possible, they have integrated green practices in setting up the store and its operation. http://www.dunkinbrands.com/pressroom/LEED.html
This restaurant was built with energy efficient materials to reduce heating and air conditioning costs. A state of the art energy monitoring system was built and efficient lighting, motion sensors were installed to save electricity. Rain water harvesting system and water efficient plumbing practices like installing a low flush toilet have made this store 30% more water efficient than a regular restaurant. To add to that, waste materials from construction of this restaurant was recycled. Even the cleaning products meet LEED requirements and California Air Resources Board (CARB) standards, better for the environment and customers. So you get your dosage of guilt free indulgence.
Dunkin's plan is to replicate this model across all their stores making it a completely green organization, not just in thought but also in practice. This particular store at St. Petersburg will serve as a prototype for all future green construction. So now you can enjoy your responsible cuppa!
