"She's Still Four Years Old" - A Green Way of Cleaning up Accidents
My cousin is in the process of adopting a three to five year old boy, and so in this period of anticipation, she is gathering an arsenal of child-rearing advice from her family and friends. She and I were IMing this morning - I about having to clean up another accident, and she about earning grants for her non-profit organization that helps children in need. I call her the "ultimate fairy godmother" because of what she accomplishes with her job. And one day, I believe that she will make a most awesome mother.
Today I shared advice on how to clean up pee from an absorbent material (bed, futon). My cousin was surprised when I told her that my daughter is still wetting her bed, and I responded that she is still four years old. This is just another facet of childrearing!
I came about this solution by way of research on the web, and for the fact that I ran out of my usual solution of "Kids and Pets". Here's an inexpensive and green solution.
#1: Dab as much up as possible with rags
#2: Pour vinegar into the affected area
#3: Pour borax on top of vinegar
#4: Direct fan on top of mattress to help dry it out
This is what "Good Housekeeping" might call the "good enough" solution. I can't say it removes stains, but it does eliminate the odor. Using a rubber/plastic sheet helps prevent these types of accidents, but sometimes one forgets.
