Organic and sustainable threads
When I hear the term “organic,” I usually think of foods that aren’t chemically fertilized or heavily sprayed with pesticides. However, I also associate the word “organic” with the idea that these foods are beneficial to our health as well as the health of our planet. It is important to realize that this word can refer to not only the foods we eat, but also the cotton we wear everyday.
Recently, I read an interesting article about the top three most pesticide-laden crops in the world: coffee, tobacco, and cotton. I was astounded by the horrific statistics regarding conventional cotton farming—cotton producers around the world annually use nearly $2.6 billion worth of pesticides and insecticides, which accounts for over 35% of the global annual pesticide and insecticide use. Unfortunately, the horrors don’t end there—in order to grow enough cotton to make just a single conventional cotton t-shirt, approximately 1/3 of a pound of pesticides, herbicides, and defoliants are needed. Pesticide treatments are often carried out through aerial spraying, and it is estimated that more than 75% of the pesticides do not land on the cotton crop itself. In other words, the majority of pesticides sprayed drift miles away and may land on other crops and homes, causing overexposure of these highly toxic chemicals in farmers and their communities.
Green Label Organic
Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, Green Label Organic is a family owned and operated business that was co-created in 2007 in response to the shocking statistics regarding conventional cotton farming. Two lifetime environmentalists, Rain and George, developed the company due to their desire to make a change in the world. After learning about the severe environmental influence of conventionally grown cotton, the couple set out to educate and inform as many people as possible of the “importance of supporting organic farming and responsible, sustainable business practices.”
Due to Green Label Organic’s eco-friendly philosophy, the company has designed a colorful collection of 100% Certified Organic Ring Spun cotton t-shirts and tops. Made in the USA, each piece of clothing is artfully designed to deliver fun and positive messages about the environment and sustainability (take a look at Green Label Organic’s t-shirts at http://www.greenlabel.com/products). In addition to these eco-friendly messages, the designs are printed on the tops without the use of polyvinyl chlorides (PVCs) or other harsh chemicals. Besides being super-soft, each Green Label Organic shirt is also gently garment-washed with eco-conscious low impact dyes.
