What do lower gas prices mean for business?
I am never surprised by our lack of long term memory in this country. Just a few short months ago, everyone was jumping on the Green bandwagon as a knee jerk reaction to skyrocketing oil prices. There had to be a better option than paying $4.00+ a gallon, right? All of a sudden, solar, wind and other alternative energies were getting a place at the table. The big 3 were earnestly developing electric cars to help free us from the grip of foreign oil.
Going green was no longer for hippies and tree huggers and our sales team was waltzing into major retailers who had all but closed their doors to new vendors due to the tightening economy. So, the world was our oyster. Fast forward to today: oil prices are way down and we're returning to the status quo that has gotten us into the environmental pickle that we're in now. Alternative energies are being pushed again to the back burner (no pun intended). I heard this morning that Toyota is discontinuing the Prius program here in the U.S. It's worth the money to develop this technology, people!
So, what does this mean for Green companies like Showpiece? It remains to be seen. I have to continue to believe that we, as a nation, can recapture some long term vision of the consequences of our actions of yesterday. Yes, our pocketbooks are a huge priority, but let's not forget the enthusiasm for the Environment that we had last Summer. Maybe there is something to that proposed gas tax....
