Houston restaurant Haven features locally farmed food

Houston has come a long way from its previous years being dubbed one of the top “Fattest Cities” in America—perhaps with the help of certified green restaurants like Haven.

Located on Algerian off of Interstate 59, Haven’s menu features items prepared fresh from local farms since opening their doors in December 2009. Here is a list of the local farms that provide for Haven:

  • Animal Farm
  • Atkinson Farm
  • Bryan Farms
  • Blue Heron Dairy
  • Broken Arrow Ranch
  • Brazos Valley Cheese
  • Dustin Eggs
  • Froberg Farm
  • Gundermann Farm
  • Texas Wild
  • Mozzarella Cheese Company
  • Heartbrand Beef
  • Harrison Hog Farm
  • Hodges Ranch
  • Homestead Grist Mill
  • Pure Luck Dairy
  • Rio Grande Organics
  • Veldhuizen Dairy
  • Woodduck Farms

Haven has an eclectic menu that offers a range of seafood, Mexican, barbecue or vegetarian items, making it doubtful to grow tired of their food selections. Items such as their shrimp corn dog appetizer with Tabasco mash remolaude and lemonade is an unlikely combination, but orchestrates the perfect start to a good meal.

Other menu items include different salads and soups like the Hill Country Wild Boar Chili; sandwiches like the Fried Farm Egg with bacon, gruyere, grilled sourdough and marinated tomato salad and main courses like jumbo lump crab cakes or beef tips.

If you aren’t hungry, there is a wide selection of cocktails, beers and various organic wines that will aid in quenching anyone’s thirst. You can also order food from the bar area if you prefer a more casual dining experience.

Haven is open for lunch and dinner on Monday-Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Saturday from 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., serving only dinner selections. Haven is closed on Sundays. If you wish to make a reservation you can visit their website, or call (713) 581-6101.

American views are quickly changing considering the well being of our diets and environment, making certified green restaurants in high demand. Haven restaurant is adapting to this change and setting the bar for Houston's dining experience--setting Houstonians free of our previously dreaded, "Fat City" reputation.
