Does anybody care about our food? (I am 100% sane by the way)
I just gave a presentation for my education class at a local University. My topic was to discuss how unhealthy school lunches really are and ways we can improve it. This class is full of future teachers. I was absolutely shocked at the indifference they displayed on the subject. They are relatively young with no children of their own, still wet behind the ears. I supose that might have contributed to the afore mentioned disinterest. As a mother of a four year old, I am scared to death of sending my son off to school. He will pack his lunch every day or be homeschooled. There are increasing amounts of recalls every year. The FDA is supposedly impliminting a 'plan' that will improve the saftey of our food. I'm not so sure it will do any good. The problem lies in the methods used to raise and grow our food. Food has been industrialized to cut costs, and increase output. The idea was most likely ingenous in the beginning. Corporate greed, and government interest quickly spoiled the improvements.
I would love to eat only organic foods but the cost is outrageous! We are on a strict budget as are most families at this time. We do not qualify for government assisstance, so we are resigned to choose between junk food or foods full of harmful chemicals. I dread grocery day. My stomach turns each time I feed my family because I know what is in that food and I can't do anything about it. I live in a rural area where farmers markets are plentiful. I take full advantage of these godsends during the summer months. I would love to have my own garden and can foods, and make many things from scratch. The depressing reality is I don't have the time or money. It costs to be healthy, and it costs to be self-sufficent. I work 35 hours a week, attend a university full time, raise a four year old, have my cleaning duties, and to make matters more complicated my husband works third shift. We barely make enough to survive and when we do have a little extra money it goes toward fixing one of our two unreliable vehicles. Enough of my ranting.
The point I am trying to make is that people need to care about what they put in their bodies. Everyone is concerned with drugs and secondhand smoke, but the foods they are eating contain more harmful chemicals. When fed these tainted foods over a lifetime, genetic abnormalities occur. Chromosomes mutate, diseases become more severe, and I would not be the least bit surprised if in 50 years it is common for humans to have 3 eyes, no hair, and be unable to reproduce. I plan to continue to blog. next time I will have links, facts, and cited sources. This is my first blog. I am new at this, and will improve each time I write. So please be understanding. Thank you to everyone who read this. * peace *
