Healthy Mattress Tip: The US Bedding Manufacturing Laws require all mattresses to pass a fire safety test, resulting in most mattresses sold in this country to be soaked with toxic, fire retardant chemicals in order to pass this test. Other countries such as Germany have banned these chemicals due to their health risks. I have found a loop hole in the Law: If you sell just materials to make a mattress, and not a finished mattress, you do not have to comply with the fire safety standards or chemically treat those materials in any way!
Product Tip: With this loophole in mind, we designed two DIY mattress kits using 100% cotton fabric and organically grown buckwheat hulls, which are naturally fire resistant. Why make a mattress out of a highly combustible material such as foam and then add chemicals to prevent it from catching on fire when you can simply use a material that does not catch on fire in the first place? Buckwheat hulls also provide great air circulation and do not make good homes for dust mites and bed bugs. Buckwheat is not a wheat (it is in the sorrel and rhubarb family) so it is very rare for anyone to be allergic to buckwheat hulls.
OYEB's mattress kits are also modular and expandable so you do not need to buy a new mattress if you need a different size mattress. One design is machine washable as well!
