String or Plastic Bags in Turkey?
An amendment was made in 2011 in the law number 5179, banning plastic bags from widespread use in supermarkets and other shopping centers.. pls. see the clause in Turkish: http://www2.tbmm.gov.tr/d24/2/2-0048.pdf .. Some municipalities are forcing this clause in the law within their territories but the number is no more than a few. Everybody on the planet knows about the harms and scathe of plastic or nylon or Polyethylene-whatever you call it- bags. I made a short research on the effect of Polyethylene bags in a developing country's environment and found hazard to drainages, pipelines, small animals and to human life.. Plastics bags can not be overridden as the tip of an iceberg.. But this is not the whole issue and I will not talk about it. But my intention is to draw attention to a status-quo in Turkey where in spite of an existing law, it is far from practise. Plactic bags are currently freebies and surplus in markets, only few environment-conscious market chains are supplying the customers with 100% degradable bags. A subservient idea could be to charge for plastic bags to reduce demand, an influential and depletory way for consumers to see the cost involved when using the plastic bags and to reduce the demand. I know New Yorkers are widely using string bags like people in Italy and France. We can try the same. Personally speaking I always go shopping with my own string bag and sometimes cartoon box(es) and it would not bother me if I have to carry the goods on my back.. Anyway I am posting this short article hoping some people will hear my voice and the scream of mother nature, taking a step towards saving the planet..
