Longtime animal advocates Hilary Swank and Jane Lynch are co-hosting a primetime Thanksgiving Day special on Fox to celebrate the joys of owning a rescue dog. The first-of-its-kind telethon, titled "Fox's Cause for Paws: An All-Star Dog Spectacular," will raise money and throw a spotlight on the millions of dogs awaiting adoption.
"I've always been an animal lover," Swank, an executive producer on the project, told Entertainment Tonight. "To me this is a great opportunity to celebrate dogs and the immense joy that they bring to our lives."
Swank, who co-founded the animal charity Hilaroo in 2012, praised Fox for agreeing to back the event.
"We are so fortunate to have an animal advocate in the FOX network that not only sees the need for more awareness surrounding this issue, but is willing to set aside a two-hour block for this important cause," she said. "This partnership will change the path of a soul for thousands of animals looking for their forever home."
With television events like Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl and the Hallmark Channel's Kitten Bowl bringing in huge ratings (as well as the Internet's love for all things dogs and cats), it's clear that there's an audience for such a program. Fox, in partnership with Petfinder.com, is going all out to make this two-hour block extremely entertaining - with testimonials from celebrity owners (Josh Duhamel, Scarlett Johansson, Miranda Lambert, Kristen Bell, LeAnn Rimes, Ke$ha, and more), as well as an awards portion with categories like Cutest Puppy, Best Celebrity/Dog Lookalike, Guiltiest Dog, etc.
There will also be segments dedicated to important topics like spay and neuter (no word on if Bob Barker will guest-host that spot), a performance by the famous "Olgate Dogs," and 35 adoptable pups for everyone to fight over. Can't adopt, but still want to help? No problem. Viewers will be able to donate to the Petfinder Foundation via a text number provided during the broadcast.
Added executive producer Michael Levitt: "We've seen the entertainment industry come together for so many worthwhile causes benefiting people, now it's time for them to rally for man's best friend."
"Fox's Cause for Paws: An All-Star Dog Spectacular" airs November 27 at 8 p.m. E/T.
