New bear on the block

Wolodja, a 2-year-old male polar bear, sticks out his tongue on Aug. 23 while exploring his enclosure at the Berlin zoo in Germany.

The zoo — also the former home of Knut, the famous polar bear raised by zookepers that died unexpectedly in 2011 — acquired Wolodja from a zoo in Moscow in hopes that he will pair up with a female polar bear and produce offspring.

Keeping his head above the water, Wolodja cools off in his new home.

After a dip in his pool, a soggy Wolodja scratches his underside against the ground.
