Piping plover

The threatened piping plover, or Charadrius melodus, makes its home along the Northern Great Plains and Atlantic coast; however it’s the birds in the Great Lakes region that are endangered. These small shorebirds are primarily threatened by the development of the coastal beaches where they nest. They are incredibly sensitive to human presence and will abandon their nests if disturbed. In 2006, the bird was listed by the Audubon Society as one of the 10 most endangered in the country.
