The Pyrenean ibex, a type of mountain goat related to the Spanish ibex (shown here), was officially declared extinct in 2000 when the last remaining animal of its kind was found dead in northern Spain. Shortly before its death, scientists took skin samples from the goat’s ear and preserved it in liquid nitrogen, and in 2009 the ibex was cloned, making it the first species to become “unextinct.”

Unfortunately, the cloned Pyrenean ibex died seven minutes later because of lung defects.
