ElephantsDue to their dexterous trunks, elephants are capable of painting with more detail than any other creature in the animal kingdom apart from primates. Working with zookeepers and handlers, the sensitive beasts have been trained to paint landscapes, still lifes and even self-portraits. Some of the paintings are of such high quality that they have fooled experts at auctions into believing they were crafted by people.

You can actually see the bullhook in this picture if you look close enough. Next to the rope tied around the trainer's waist. This article which I previously thought was interesting, now disgusts me. I think MNN should immediately revise this article to not include the torture of elephants, or any other animals forced to paint.

Watch this elephant painting. Nobody is doing anything to it. It's definitely happy as you will see in this incredible video!
Knoxville, Tn. zoo, those elephants aren't forced to paint anything, I actually think it entertaining for them. I know that the artwork is as individual as each elephant has it's own style. I would love to own one of these great pieces of art, some of the finest any artist ever created. Becaused thet are not forced to paint, the pieces are few and somewhat expensive. Totally worth the price, if you are lucky enough to be around when new works are created!! God Bless our wonderful artist from.... More
Elephants have not been "trained" how to paint. Their "trainer" keeps a sharp metal hook and jams it through their ear, and they use this to direct their trunks, FORCING them to paint. It's such unnecessary abuse.
Yeah, I see the pole that the handler in this picture is holding, but I've seen the elephants at the Indianapolis Zoo paint - and there is no hook, and no forcing them to do anything. In fact, they ask the elephants if they want to paint, and if they wander away to play with another toy, they are free to do so. Usually, one or two of them WANT to paint and the keeper just helps hold paint tray up so it doesn't get knocked over.
