Fossils of extinct creatures elicit daydreams about seeing dinosaurs walk the Earth, watching the first birds take flight, observing a trilobite scurry through a tide pool.
Other than for the remote hope of developing technology to clone extinct animals, these ponderings are forever reserved to the imagination. Extinction is truly nature's greatest tragedy, and the reason we should cherish the creatures that do still roam the planet, the ones that we still do have a chance to experience. This is especially true when it comes to creatures teetering on the brink of extinction.
It is in this spirit that we present to you the world's rarest animals, the loneliest creatures on Earth: 8 species with fewer than 10 confirmed individuals left alive.
