Fastest flier in horizontal flight: Grey-headed albatross
When it comes to the speed of birds, records are hard to figure. Much depends on things like how the speed was measured, the wind speeds and weather the bird was flying in and so on. But according to Guinness World Records, the team that measured the flight of a satellite-tagged grey-headed albatross shows that this is likely the fastest horizontal flyer. A published report shows the albatross flying at 78.9 mph for more than 8 hours, during a storm, as it returned to its nest. Someone was in a hurry to get home! Other candidates for fastest horizontal flier include the golden eagle at 80 mph, and the white-throated needletail at 105 mph.
