This harbor seal pup was found stranded in Seward, Alaska, in May, and when her mother had not returned 24 hours later, workers at the Alaska SeaLife Center intervened. They named the little girl Gouda — every year the rescued animals are named according to a theme and 2011’s theme is “wine and cheese” — and began feeding her five times a day. After a few days of care, Gouda regained her strength and started splashing around in saltwater twice a day so she could get used to swimming. The seal will remain at the wildlife center until she’s healthy enough to be released back into the wild.
