Lazarus species: New Caledonian crested gecko
Wiki Commons/public domain
Where is this info coming from? Crested Geckos are commonly (and easily) bred in captivity. I bought five @ $100/each sometime in the '90s and bred scores of them over the years. I considered myself lucky to get $25/each for them by about 2000. I finally decided to give up the hobby--too many loose crickets.2W
they sell these crested geckos in the pet stores now... these arent rare at all ... and obviously poeple are still in awe about them and thinks they're endangered, thats the whole purpose of this article ... DUH!
Stop plastering links in comment sections. It is tacky, and makes your cause look bad. It screams "desperation!" and I don't think that is what you are going for. It weakens your point. So, let them come to you if they have questions - every one knows how to use google.
These reptiles are already in the pet stores, and have been for years ... its 2010 GET OUT OF THE HOUSE! lol
Damn dat gekco looks beast. shit i wonder how long till dem breeders start breedin dem like crazy and sellin dem as pets.
there are endangered animals kept as pets legally
most that i know of are types of cat or ape
the tiger, cheetah, orangs, jungle cats
most need special permits
being pets could save many from extinction
dogs and kitties are doing pretty good
except the otter hound
Ha it does kind of look like Stevie from Madagascar. King Julian is probabley looking for him :) lol
It's kind of cute! No, it's really cute! I love the eyes... it compliments the colour of its body.. I wonder what super-power it has!
I think in the Savage Dragon comic book, there was a character names Sara based on this lizard. She was orange and had the spikes and everything. She's so cute!
Yes They Sell This Species @ Petco. I have purchased 4 of them in the last 2 years for $49.99 plus tax. Check it out.
Don't forget that there are thousands of different species of geckos some of which look eerily similar. I doubt this was the exact type of gecko at petco as it's highly illegal to sell or purchase endangered species with the intent of keeping them as pets, they'd get in so much trouble. But, I can understand the allure of these lizards, they're gorgeous the prettiest for lack of a better term is the tokay gecko, it's bright blue with red spots :)
This is the New Caledonia Gecko, Crested Gecko and they do sell them in pet stores and are bred often by reptile enthusiasts and reproducing wonderful colors and morphs. Check out Utubes on Crested Geckos and you will find them there too! They are adorable!
The Tokay is cool but they are mean... And yes these are in the pet trade you moron, the internet is covered with breeders... you obviously don't know what you are talking about
Rationalist was addressing the statement that these geckos were found in a Petco, not whether they can be found elsewhere. You obviously don't have very good reading comprehension. Moron.
They are really cute, & they are as soft as silk!! I own 5 of them, they are a really low key gecko to own and are addicting if you start. Of course the only ones that you can get have been in the states for years, like the article states they are considered to be endangered in their original habitat.
