Where is this info coming from? Crested Geckos are commonly (and easily) bred in captivity. I bought five @ $100/each sometime in the '90s and bred scores of them over the years. I considered myself lucky to get $25/each for them by about 2000. I finally decided to give up the hobby--too many loose crickets.2W

Stop plastering links in comment sections. It is tacky, and makes your cause look bad. It screams "desperation!" and I don't think that is what you are going for. It weakens your point. So, let them come to you if they have questions - every one knows how to use google.

there are endangered animals kept as pets legally
most that i know of are types of cat or ape
the tiger, cheetah, orangs, jungle cats
most need special permits
being pets could save many from extinction
dogs and kitties are doing pretty good
except the otter hound

I think in the Savage Dragon comic book, there was a character names Sara based on this lizard. She was orange and had the spikes and everything. She's so cute!

Don't forget that there are thousands of different species of geckos some of which look eerily similar. I doubt this was the exact type of gecko at petco as it's highly illegal to sell or purchase endangered species with the intent of keeping them as pets, they'd get in so much trouble. But, I can understand the allure of these lizards, they're gorgeous the prettiest for lack of a better term is the tokay gecko, it's bright blue with red spots :)

Rationalist was addressing the statement that these geckos were found in a Petco, not whether they can be found elsewhere. You obviously don't have very good reading comprehension. Moron.

They are really cute, & they are as soft as silk!! I own 5 of them, they are a really low key gecko to own and are addicting if you start. Of course the only ones that you can get have been in the states for years, like the article states they are considered to be endangered in their original habitat.

New Caledonian crested gecko

Originally described in 1866 and long feared extinct, this unusual gecko was rediscovered in 1994 in the aftermath of a tropical storm. Its oddest features are the hair-like projections found above the eyes and a crest that runs from each eye to the tail. The species is currently being assessed for CITES protection and endangered status.
