Braving the New England chill
A female northern cardinal rests on a branch on Jan. 2 at the Trustom Pond National Wildlife Refuge in Charlestown, R.I.
Although the female is striking with her red accented feathers, it is the males that pack the real punch of color with their full coats of bright red feathers.
When there is an clear difference in the phenotypic traits (such as color or size) of males and females in a species, this is called sexual dimorphism.
