A flock of multicolored chicks are sold on March 28 at a street market in Beirut, leading up to the celebration of Easter on April 6.

To make chicks colorful, artificial dye — which sometimes contain ammonia or hydrogen peroxide — is injected into the embryo before it hatches. Although the practice still exists in some countries, it is illegal in many U.S. states.
