Gwen Cooper wrote a best-selling book about her energetic cat, Homer, who had to have both of his eyes removed.

to the person who saif they were unimpressed-guess u missed the part in which a BLIND,8 or 9 pound CAT,threw itself ,scratching and attacking,at a male intruder who climbed into the author's apartment at night! without that happening,the author might not be here,or might be writing a much sadder story about recovering from violence!
I have had a blind cat for over 10 years. When he was a baby he lost his eyes someone left him to die I found him and took him in. The vets wanted me to put him down telling me he would never have any kind of life and that i would never be able to leave him alone or move the house around.Due to money issues I have moved over 6 times with him and with in a hours he has everything down about the new place. books about animals at my local bookstore. I found and did'
purchase Homer a couple of years ago. I haven't read it yet but now I will.. Thanks for making my life a little better with animal

I have just ordered this book for my Kindle as I am a self-confessed cat fanatic and love reading true stories about cats and the humans who own them! Peter Gether's books about Norton and Cleveland Amory's books about Polar Bear are also fantastic reads - they both wrote three books and I couldn't put them down.
I read and really enjoyed this book. ("Enjoy" being maybe not the right word here.) The kitten had no concept of not being "normal" and did whatever his other two "roomie" cats did. The most moving part of the book, I thought, was when 9/11 happened, and the author was far from her apartment where the three cats were; they were within the zone of of the 9/11 pollution, fires, etc. The author moved heaven and earth, literally, to get past barricades and back to her apartment, carrying a huge.... I'm currently reading this book, I'm almost done with it; it is certainly a page turner. Every animal lover MUST read this book. What a beautiful thing Gwen did by adopting this blind kitten; not everyone would do such a thing. The story is inspiring and tugs at your heart strings. Homer is an amazing cat!
This is a truey inspering story i have about my cat.One day i was walking my cat Jerry and he got away from me,and the unthinkable happened he ran under and cement truck.The worse day of my life.Jerry had lost both front feet and all of his tail.My vet preformed an miracle and saved Jerrys life. Now Jerry pushes himself around with just his back feet.I have hardwood floors so its easy for jerry to slide himself about.We do have some problems with Jerry when he go down steps he will tumble.... I beleive every pet has a purpose in life. Homer with his hightened sense of hearing and smell could be used to detect IEDs in Afganistan. All he would need to do is walk out in front of the convoys to detect the IEDs. If homer needs help the US army can assign a seeing eye dog for him. I used to have a blind cat too like Homer but I lost him when he jumped into a windmill and then fell into a blast furnance:(

What an amazing and truly inspiring story! There are so many animals out there that are treated cruelly and neglected. They often fall into terrible situations that they alone have to suffer and endure. I am glad that this little kitty, Homer, was lucky enough to find a loving home. I know that there are many blind cats and injured/disabled animals that are euthanized daily.
Cats have a right to live just as much as any person on this earth. I can't imagine my life without my little babies.... More
Sight isn't as important to cats as it is to humans. Couple that with the fact that your cat lost its sight at an early age, it's no wonder he's living a normal life, he never learned to rely on seeing.

I am a ICU nurse for a rescue group. I usually get cats that are very severly injured or very badly abused and run a ICU for them until they are well.
I have several fosters who are missing limbs, the most challanged is a 1 legged cat who's legs and tail were severed when she was a very tiny kitten being in an engine block of a truck. She healed, and does so well, and jumps, runs, and plays. No one told her she couldn't do it. She just does. No stopping her.

We loved and lived with a beautiful black and white Ely for 15 years until his death from an inoperable tumour last year. He was blind from birth and it certainly never stopped him from enjoying his life to the full. He was truly a magnificent cat in every way - a huge personality in a huge frame, he grew to an impressive 20lbs in weight without managing to be a porker. 2 years ago i found a kitten the size of my palm. The vet diagnosed her with a serious heart murmer and she probably wouldn't live but a few months. 2 years later, and about the size of a 2 month old kitten, she runs the house. She dares our other cat who is nearly 3 times her size to boss her around, and my dog adores her (and my dog, she adores no one) Her resilience inspires me, as does Homers.. Time to add another book to my list to read :)
we too have a kitty, who is now 18 years old, who had her eyes removed at 8 weeks of age due to an infection.
iris has taught us similar lessons as homer, and inspires anyone who meets her. her 'disability' may have contributed to her extremely loving personality -- causing many folks to attempt to adopt her away from us.
she's provided us with a lifetime of stories, but just as a sample, this is a cat who fearlessly (and at full speed) ran up a timber post which towered 30 ft to.... More

This little fellow reacted like humans with disabilities who, when they don't know what they can't do, do it anyway. Uplifting little story - think I may have to check out the book :-)
