Sad sight in beachside pool

Water laps against the ridged underbelly of a young male humpback whale that washed up in a beachside swimming area on Aug. 1 on New Port Beach in Sydney, Australia.

The 33-foot whale, which was probably the victim of rough seas, was pushed over a chain fence into the public saltwater pool during high tide.

Health hazard

The limp carcass of the humpback, which has been described as a "big pile of jelly" by some curious onlookers, rests on its side in a beachside pool in New Port Beach. Local officials are warning spectators and swimmers to stay away from the carcass, which may harbor diseases and be a lure sharks.
