Zoo kills rescued baby owls
The Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita, Kan., euthanizes four baby owls minutes before a rescue agency arrived to take custody.
My husband came home with a baby raccoon a couple of years ago - it was standing in the road next to it's dead mother and sibling. We brought it to the nature center, who referred us about 30 miles away to a family who takes in "critters." While I don't like raccoons in my yard, I don't believe in killing them, either. I'd also like to see the managers at the zoo held accountable for murdering the owls. There are many qualified people who would have made sure the owls had homes and could be.... More
Why not fine the people that picked up the baby owls? Let nature take it's course.
I live in this city and have been to this zoo and feel SICK to think about this. They just took the lazy way out instead of trying to contact a local wildlife rehabilitator who would have at least TRIED to save them.
The zoo sent out this letter to newsletter subscribers, explaining why they have this policy and what the situation was. Truly let's put the blame back on where this problem originated: the ones that found the owls. There is no doubt that they were fully aware that the owls would be euthanized if left there, and were given other options should they have respect for the lives of the owls. More than likely this was another situation of people invading what nature was already doing, and maybe.... More
Wow, I wonder what else that zoo is doing "according to procedure". Shame on them.
Thanks goodness, when my husband found a baby owl last week, there was a place that would take it in Albany, GA
I am beyond disgusted, I am outraged that a Zoo, a supposed institution instilled with the belief of preserving the existence of wild animals would KILL BABY OWLS!
It seems almost like these STUPID zoo employees did it to be vindictive to the Raptor Rehabilitator.
I hope this zoo is fined/punished by the Federal Gov't for destroying those birds instead of following federal law and protocol.
I hope anyone that sees this news footage contacts the zoo & lets the zoo know.... More
