Earth Hour scenes from around the world

The world turned off the lights for an hour Saturday night to bring awareness to the problems posed by global warming. Here's what it looked like.

More than a billion people turned their lights off on Saturday night in celebration of Earth Hour. The green blogosphere and Twitterverse was a buzz with excited greenies soaking up the darkness between 8:30 and 9:30pm as they sought to raise awareness of climate change and our need to do something about it. Just like New Years Eve, Earth Hour swept across the world as time zones ticked over to the 8:30pm mark.

Here are a few photographs from the festivities.

Sydney-

Tokyo-

San Francisco-

Boston-

Kalamazoo-

Boulder-

And finally, here's a photo of me celebrating in the dark up here in Maine.
Set your calendar, Earth Hour 2010 is just a few hundred days away. Get ready!

(Yeah, I woke up feeling cheeky today. To check out real photos of Earth Hour, swing over to the Earth Hour homepage or this amazing collection from Boston.com. Also check out the interview my pal Jeffrey did with the Mayor of Nashville talking about Earth Hour. )

One of the best times I ever had...

in NYC was when they had that huge power outage maybe three years ago...once everyone realized that nothing terrorist had happened, everyone turned the city into a big roving party...I swayed into Central Park for awhile and it felt like, I don't know, Colorado or something.

it just goes to show how light-influenced our cities are.

My children on Earth Hour....

....were amazed & blown-away by seeing our (very large) city go dark around them...thanks to everyone who helped with this...we love our urban home but i grow sad for my children when I think of their daily disconnect from nature.

nothing wrong with..

..a bit of cheekiness in the morning! (and, truthfully, this is just what Earth Hour looked like from my window).
