The world without ozone

NASA just released projections showing what the ozone layer would look like if we hadn't banned CFCs. Not a pretty picture.

Here's a unicorn chaser to go with my 'end on a downer' post last night about bluefin tuna.

We saved the ozone layer.

That isn't really new news, but what IS new news is a set of projections NASA just released that shows what the ozone layer would have looked like had we not banned chlorofluorocarbons. By the time my children become grandparent age, we would have lost nearly the entire ozone layer. My great grandchildren wouldn't have been able to go outside during the day without completely covering up their skin. Cancer rates would be crippling to society, and who knows what kind of radical changes we would have seen to the environment due to the blast of new UV light hitting earthside.

So good job humanity; we didn't muck that one up.

Good news on the global warming front, if we hadnt have stopped CFC's the world would have been in a worse state.
