February 2005: Eastern Europe
Here we see a snowy Europe on Feb. 28, 2005, as imaged by the MODIS Rapid Response team from NASA’s Terra satellite. It shows the Balkans, where a state of emergency was declared after several winter blizzards. We can also see the Czech Republic and Austria, which also received hefty amounts of snow. This image was created using both short-wave infrared and visible light. As NASA describes it, “The resulting combination makes the snow appear red, plant-covered areas look blue-green, and clouds appear white and light orange.”
