The garden hose piping sulfur dioxide is global-scale tinkering masquerading as a solution that appears to be the essence of elegant simplicity. Not sure, after thinking about it, that we'd want the same people who have brought us the disasters of fossil fuel-powered industrialization and global-scale war to be implementing ham-handed solutions to our world climate dilemma, thanks.

"System change, not climate change."

At all the above. The idea is very plausible and very cheap, but most of all: it is scientifically proven. It's called the Budyko Blanket (or Budyko's Blanket). Look it up. You'll be amazed how easy it is to solve the global warming problem instead of blaming it on the absolute smallest contributer of all (the car).

To:Informed Educated Citizen - They are not trying to cause eruptions, just recreate the global cooling effect with Sulfur Dioxide, so no additional CO2 creation.
That being said, wont the airborne SO2 cause massive amounts of acid rain?

This is at least the third bad idea in a row. First, SaveOurPlanet, you are incorrect. Secondly, you even admit it later, but volcanoes release MORE carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which would most likely negate any albedo effects that forcing a volcano to erupt would create.

Not controllable. Instead of controlling global warming, it might throw us back into an ice age.

Create man-made volcanoes

The controversial book SuperFreakonomics has proposed one of the most outlandish ideas of all. It suggests mimicking the ash-spewing, atmospheric cooling effects of massive volcanic eruptions by attaching several miles of garden hose to a helium balloon and pumping sulfur dioxide into the upper atmosphere. The sulfur dioxide has the power to essentially block sunlight, thus cooling down the planet.
