Top 10 ways to prepare for the total breakdown of society without looking like a (complete) lunatic1) Build a stockpile of foodHaving a stockpile of food is a great first step to take to protect your food security (in addition to planting a garden, learning to hunt and building a greenhouse). Stocking up on your favorites also means you'll be eating Klondike bars and Skittles years after the factories shut down for sheer lack of ingredients and energy. I think all of the ways you listed are already socially accepted here in the south, except, perhaps, the 15 foot fence, which would raise some eyebrows. Our family already hunts, has a backyard garden, is handy with tools, and we are seriously contemplating getting off of the energy grid (for $ value, mostly).
