Magnetic north shifting by 40 miles a year, might signal pole reversal
The magnetic pole is moving faster than at any time in human history, causing major problems for navigation and migratory wildlife.

POLE POSITION: Magnetic north is moving so fast that it is hampering navigation. (Photo: Calsidyrose/Flickr)

The magnetic north pole is currently shifting at a faster rate than at any time in human history — almost 40 miles a year — and some experts believe that it may be the beginning of a complete pole reversal, according to the Independent.

The changes are beginning to cause major problems for aviation, navigation and migratory animals that use the Earth's magnetic field to orient themselves. Some airports have had to change the names of their runways to better correspond to their current direction relative to magnetic north.

Ever since the magnetic north pole was first discovered in 1831, geologists have been tracking its progress. Unlike true north (which is marked by the Earth's axis), magnetic north is constantly on the move due to changes in the planet's molten core, which contains iron. Throughout most of recorded history, the pole has been positioned at or around Canada's icy Ellesmere Island, but if it keeps moving at its current rate, it won't be long before it sits above Russia instead.

The thing that really makes the pole's current movement so unusual, however, is the speed that it is shifting. In the last decade alone, movement has increased by a third, throwing off compasses by roughly 1 degree every five years.

Changes that fast have already caused major headaches for the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration. Tampa International Airport in Florida has just spent a month renaming all of its runways, which are named after the degree at which they point on a compass. Similar changes were recently made to runways at Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach, and across the country runways now need to be renamed at least once every five years.

The shifting pole may also become a grave concern for migratory wildlife, such as birds, turtles and other sea creatures that use Earth's magnetic field to navigate over great distances. It's unclear if these animals are capable of recalibrating their navigational instincts to compensate for the changes.

The rapid shifting of the pole's position has prompted some experts to speculate that the Earth's entire magnetic field may be preparing to "flip," whereby all compasses invert and point south instead of north. It may sound radical, but in geological time, pole reversals are relatively common. Though they typically occur once every 400,000 years or so, it's been 780,000 years since the last flip.

Scientists disagree on how a pole reversal would effect ecosystems around the world, but some alarmists warn of a planet-altering catastrophe, whereby earthquakes and monumental tsunamis threaten the Earth for decades. Though such radical doomsday prophecies cannot be completely ruled out, the vast majority of scientists are tempered by calmer predictions.

"Reversals typically take about 10,000 years to happen," said Jeffrey Love of the U.S. Geological Survey. "And 10,000 years ago civilisation did not exist. These processes are slow, and therefore we don't have anything to worry about."

I have a little compass on my desk which I keep an eye on, it is taped to my desk. Yesterday evening I noticed that magnetic north pole had shifted 10 degrees NNE. It is still pointing there now. Comet Elenin? CERN's black hole at the north pole? HAARP and the Fukushima? Makes you wonder.

What I said is that the Sun is causing all the things that are happening. The fact that the Sun’s magnetic poles have flipped has had an adverse effect on the Earth. “North to North and South to South poles”. When you place two magnets side by side in this way they repel each other, however they do not repel at equal rates. This is what has caused the increase in the tilt of the planet. The plates move because the planet is somewhat out of balance. The liquid core oil etc. is moving around
.... More
to somewhat self correct itself. It works somewhat like a hydraulic lift works, when pressure is exerted on the oil under the cylinder the lift goes up. When you remove the pressure on top of the oil it comes back down it’s the same with the plates now the same is true if you remove the oil from the area the lift will come down. Everything is just moving around, Yellowstone is rising because there is oil building up under the area. The reason it has not erupted or is late is because we were removing the oil in the past that is now producing the upward pressure that we are now seeing. When she erupts that is what will cause an ice age because it will block the Sun’s rays that heat the core of the planet. So the logical conclusion would be to remove the pressure on the area by drilling for oil. It’s not a matter of greed it’s a matter of necessity. Trust me if the largest volcano on the planet burps it will affect everyone! Case closed… As I’m writing this Japan just got hit with a another 7.4 magnitude quake If you think I’m kidding you are sadly mistaken! 4-7-2011

The heat depends on where the Sun is. If the poles do flip the tilt will come back the other way.

I highly doubt the flipping of the poles will change the temperature at the poles. The earth itself isn't changing position. The magnetic field is. Which means Canada will still be cold. And the equator will still be hot. But hey. If It does get hot for Canadians just imagine how beautiful Canada will look will stuff growing 365. And the nice fresh water. Ontario will look like an oasis.

Global warming is caused by the Sun nothing else has the power to change our climate. We can maybe disturb the ozone layer for a time but every time it thunder storms the ozone layer gets replentished little by little. That fresh smell after a good thunder storm that you smell that's ozone. The smell that a arc welder makes that too is ozone. The most important actor is the Sun and it's ray's right now the Earth is being bumped around by the magnetic forces of the Sun because both the Sun and the
.... More
Earth's poles are the same North to North and South to South that is what is bouncing the Earth's core around and that is what is causing the quakes and volcanos. Not Man or machine it's the Sun and nothing else! FACT! The oil is just being moved around because of this. There was a story last year that a golf course in So. Calif. that has crude oil on the links that the golfers walk through on a daily basis. We just need to re-think where we look for it. Think of it like this you have a glass of water thats half full you tilt it to drink from it. water seeks it's own level so does oil. The Earth is tilting a bit more these days so the oil follows suit thats all it is. I do believe that the Sun took a hit and that is what made it's poles shift. Because if you hit a magnet with a hammer hard enough in the right spot you will change it's poles or de-magnetize it.

We have a molten core because of the sun???? Clearly the sun is not the only thing that heats the earth. Just saying.

We have basically sucked all the oil out the engine and are overheating it. Global warming will have more consequences than just rising oceans and crazy whether. It only makes sense that the lava will heat up and cause valcanos and quakes. A coule degrees might not sound like much has major consequences.

"throwing off compasses by roughly 1 degree every five years." That's less true for locations where a line drawn from them to the north pole passes angularly close to the magnetic north pole. For example, each page of my navigation maps of the Chesapeake Bay, which I keep on my pleasure boat, have a printed N-S-E-W indicator that includes the offset between magnetic north and true north. So, when I look at my ship's compass, I know to head about 10 degrees away, clockwise, from the indicated N,S,
.... More
E, or W if I want to head in the true cardinal direction. The annual error in that listed offset for me, as time goes on, is less than for someone farther north along my line to the pole or in Europe because Ellesmere Island is angularly more on a line to true north for me than in Europe or for someone in, say, Newfoundland.

I was taught this when I was in elementary school back in the early 90s. The geographic north pole is always stationary, but the magnetic north pole has been moving around year after year. If any major catastrophes are going to badly damage the world, it's going to be caused by humans. We drill and empty vast oil pockets beneath oceans and land, we've thrown tons of waste and junk into the magnetosphere and left it to fall to Earth again (sometimes not disintegrating before it lands, which has caused
.... More
personal damage to people), we leak nuclear radiation into skies and water ways...Humans have failed the charge we've been given to uphold this world.

in 1972 I was stationed at the south pole(McMurdo station). We constructed the new south pole station approx.1.2miles from the existing station(built 50+yrs ago).It is now burried underground and they've built a new station to keep up with the true south pole.

What kind of paranoia cool aide are you people drinking? I have never seen so much stupidity on any site. Get out of your mama’s basement and go enter the real world. It is just Mother Nature doing her thing. It is nobody’s fault. There is no one to blame. It is not some conspiracy started by Russian and the US. It is just is. You all need to get a life.

Wow! Hey Bosko, turn on your television and wake up. Now is the time to be paranoid if anytime is right. Speaker for USGS on C-Span just admitted mining and drilling for oil does cause a weaknesses in the earth's crust, and may cause minor earthquakes. This is not your normal "Mother Nature" occurance. Millions of dead fish and birds, frequent rise in the number of earthquakes and volcanoes. Not just your normal 3 to 4 size earthquakes, but a greater number of 5 to 6 and even 7 to 8 on the scale
.... More
is happening. I've been keeping track for years now and seen a great rise is the numbers and strength of earthquakes. It may not be man made, but something is definitly going on and effecting the earth.

So by your logic, we should still have the supercontinent and should still be in an ice age since things like climate change and continental shift are things that are progressively getting worse. Look at the recent earthquakes in Japan which caused the main island to shift 2.4m east. This is normal occurrences and you speaking of them getting worse, how would we know because the richter scale wasn't invented until 1935 and historical records are not exactly reliable sources before the 19th century.

You can’t always take from one side of a spinning object and expect it to be in balance, only a fool would think otherwise. No one wants to be thought of as a fool, so then why do you spend money to balance car wheels? What happens when you don’t? When you reach speed the car feels like it wants to shake apart It rumbles through the entire car! The other thing is that when the Earth passes the Sun the poles they clash, that means the core is being pushed around. Why do you think there are volcanoes
.... More
that are erupting? It’s because the core is pushing on the lava. By holding two magnets in hand with the poles at North to North when you can feel the resistance when brought close they want to be pushed apart. That is what is causing all the disruption along with being out of balance. The core is being slammed around from the inside magnetically. I will bet that when the mantel fell it was going past the Sun pushing the core in the other direction causing a void under the plate. Why the do you think that I want the U.S. to drill here for oil on our soil? It’s to balance the rotation of the un-balanced planet! Drilling for oil in the U.S. will help fix part of the problem the fact that the mantel fell means the inside is tightening up throwing things out of balance. When a spinning object has a liquid inside of it the liquid is being pushed outward. Why do you think oil wells gush out?

Do the other planets shift as well? YES! Everything in the System that makes its way around the Sun changes. In order to make a magnet change its poles it needs to be hit hard by something. Depending on the level of approach to the Sun the Earth could get pulled closer to the Sun and tighten up the Earth's orbit a bit. Or get pushed away on a direct approach. Because of the spin and speed of the planets on the trip around the Sun,they will break free and continue on their trip. The tropic of cancer
.... More
etc. is no longer correct on the globe. Fla. moved up and funny as it seems Calif. is slanted to the left. It was Japan who built the robot that we sent to the space station and not GM. Ozone and Air pollution is our friend it will insulate us from the Sun's rays that are far more deadly. Resources, you mean energy? oil, Gas and coal, that is abundant. Plant life "trees" offset those effects and create oxygen. We put the brakes on progress by not using the energy producing resources that we have, Intelligent beings realize this, good and bad they too just want to survive. When we learn to listen to them we can learn from their experience more data to come to a better result. We just need to figure out who is good and who has bad intentions. Being “PC” does nothing but slow down the process. So plant more trees burn the fuel and call it like it is and things will work out for the better.

about "i live blah blah" migrations have been changing...I also witness migrations but geese don't seem to know where or when to migrate anymore; or migrate and then come back too early; global warming is affecting everything...the fact that birds are spontaneously combusting on your front porch means nothing; millions are dropping dead globally and should concern anybody living on the planet...... Last year had TWO 100 yr (not spring thaw) flooding due to record rain...right now having a rapid 40
.... More
degree shift in temps....from below freezing to total snow melt to below freezing and two feet of rain; roads are rapidly ruined now in time of 'fiscal austerity' and no money to repair them...I use reel mower and ride bike everywhere and use no gas, since very soon I will have to mow lawn year around...use 100% organic milky spore to fight increasing invasive species like japanese beetle.... every living thing on earth besides human cockroaches, from bees to birds to mammals depends on stable climate...bees are half gone this year....you wouldn't know if you are so disconnected from nature. I have to mow my lawn and rake leaves a weeks later every year; into November now...obviously you don't garden or grow things; fruit trees this year had buds in beginning of January; had two feet of snow yesterday and today it is 40 degrees.... start canning and preserving; not only gas is going through the roof but so is food from constantly having ever more ignorant policies, such as ethanol, etc.and you can't eat oil..... What rock are denialists hiding under?? please go back there and let educated folks handle adult issues without your constant idiocy. whatever you do, make sure you keep your empty cranium buried.

taking trillions of barrels out of the ground each and every year for 100 plus years might have an effect...too bad big oil won't have that discussion...everything is finite...you can't just suck out all the life fluids from the Earth without disastrous effects. Earth is fu*(ed; there is o way any animals can possibly survive with humans multiplying like cockroaches now....doubling faster and faster; either pole reversal and fun times or mass starvation and war....only things slowing down human cockroaches.
.... More
Young kids today will have a bleak future with no variety, no intact ecosystems and no animals except animatronic and video game version...and breeds of domesticated animals also spreading disease and breeding uncontrolled like street dogs and cats....outside will be 'silent' spring, summer, fall, and winter...whoever is around will be eating soylent green and drinking recycled piss and staying outside and wearing a mask with a filter if you go outside. food will be 'engineered' to withstand the toxic pollution.

Yeah! Lets ban fossile fuels and anything else that brings energy to force us all to live like caveman. Thanks for ruining progress!

It's one thing to regulate fossil fuels which I agree with but to ban them completely when we need the energy the most is a total joke and people like you need to be put on a one way train to Siberia.

Look, Kyle, paradigm shift didn't say a thing about banning fossil fuels. Your comments are hurtful and hard-headed. You need to grow up and get your head out of the clouds. Humans have lived without fossil fuels before. Totally no fossil fuels for about 100 years. surely we can at least survive without sucking every last little pocket of oil out of the ground. No, i'm NOT saying there should be no oil drilling, i'm only saying can we limit operations like the one that caused the BP
.... More
oil spill disaster in the Gulf? Tell me that, Kyle. Who is ruining progress, really?

Do the other planets shift as well? and concerns of tragedy were to exist on this planet because of a so called polar shift why don't we use our intelligence, and resources, to live on other planets. Anything is possible, once you think outside the box. On this planet, other forms of life have lived on earth, and were destroyed. Intelligent beings, yet we are so advanced, why do we use up the resources that we are giving, just to live on this planet. Good news GM made a robot, shot it into space
.... More
that costs 2.5 million dollars to do what a maid does here. what a break through, not to put anyone down, can we move forward faster than we are, before we are all destroyed? Or maybe that's what is supposed to happen so a more intelligent life form can use this planet as it was supposed to be, and evolve onto other planets. Life it's a mystery, that's why I love it.
