The death toll rises

Authorities have confirmed 171 deaths caused by the flash floods, and many people are still missing. Distrustful residents are blaming government officials for failing to give proper warning about the weather disaster.

Many in Krymsk say government officials intentionally sacrificed the small town to prevent floodwaters from reaching Novorossiysk, a Black Sea port necessary for exporting Russian oil and grain. However, President Vladimir Putin says the accusations are ridiculous.
