I walked home in the rain yesterday.

And I loved it.

Not having a car has been doing funny things to my perspective on life. I can't remember the last time I found myself walking out in the rain before I sold my car last month. When you have a car, you don't end up walking in the rain.

And that's a shame.

There's something very grounding about having to get from point A to point B under your own foot power while being dumped on by the sky. I got the same feeling, the same subtle thrill of living, when I lived in a tepee for a few months during a Maine winter. When you're out walking in the rain, you're a ittle closer to the raw edge of life. The world is a different place when seen from the sloshy pace of a rainy day walk. You see things you might have missed looking out the car window or on a sunny day.

See -- funny perspective on life.

Selling my car and moving into the city was one of the best things I've done in a long while. There's a freedom in waiting for the bus that I've quickly come to cherish. It's more than the financial freedom (though, that too is nice), it's an actual freedom to physically get anywhere.

I don't have a car to break down, no gas tank to run empty. When I want to go somewhere I either walk, skateboard, bike, take the bus, or hitchhike. If it's far, I take an airplane. My quality of life hasn't suffered in the least bit, quite the contrary -- I feel like I'm living a better, more-focused and centered life living the greener life in the city.

So sell your car. Move to the city and get a bus pass. All the cool (greener) kids are doing it.

I'm going for a walk in the rain.
