The TSA: Keeping us safe from snow globe-wielding terrorists

We should all give thanks to the heroes at the Transportation Security Administration for keeping air travel free from snow globe attacks.

MNN reader and friend Charlie D. shot this photograph at LaGuardia airport of a TSA poster warning travelers that "snow globes are not allowed through the security checkpoint" because our safety is their priority.

This would be funny if it wasn't so stupidly sad. We've wasted billions of dollars on responding to the old attacks while creating an airport security apparatus that stomps all over average citizens while doing little to prevent an attack from any half-bright would-be terrorist. It's airport security theater.

And you know you can't have a snow globe in a theater. Heavens no. That would be far too dangerous.

Check out these photos of the TSA in action here on MNN.

I personally think its time for a Second Constitutional Convention to stop letting government run rampant over our rights.

The author doesn't get it, at all the the posts about ethylene glycol are off base as well. It's the fact that it is a sealed container, and has the potential for electronics.
They are worried that the liquid will be replaced with something even more flammable then ethylene glycol and again, as it is a sealed container there is no way of telling what the liquid is.
The diatribe about laptops is a straw man, those go though an x-ray and are also subject to explosive "sniffing" in.... More

If you were a real journalist, you would have reported on and mentioned the ethylene glycol angle and not just launched a half-baked attack on the TSA.

You think they just go around making rules for no good reason?

Most snow globes nowadays contain ethelyne glycol, or as most of you would call it, antifreeze. A toxin in it's own right, it is also a key component of Ethylene glycol dinitrate, a liquid high explosive. Seems to make sense to me as they can't open up the snowglobe and test the liquid that they would just ban all snowglobes through the checkpoint.

If that's truly the case, explain how and why you can buy snowglobes in gift shops at the airport AFTER security check in. This issue has nothing to do with the actual contents of a snowglobe being dangerous!

Chris, anyone could smuggle just as much antifreeze in a container up their bum if they wanted to and neither the Xray machine nor the junk-touching patdowns would find it. The TSA shouldn't be banning everything that could possibly be used as a weapon; it's an impossible task and we just end up with silly bans on things like snow globes. What happens if a terrorist tries to take over an airplane by bashing the crap out of someone with a laptop? Would the TSA be pushing for a ban on laptops?.... More

You're one of those bloggers who refuses to admit that that their wrong. The fact is you didn't get the rule and wanted to rant about it. Yes on its surface it looks downright silly, but had you actually DONE some research, as you claim to have done lots, with two general searches on snow globes and the materials inside you would have magically found the answer just like I did. You thought the rule was stupid and no matter what anyone else says up to and including the fact that a snow globe.... More

Ethylene glycol is obviously a key component in ethylene glycol dinitrate which is in an explosive that is easily made at home. However I'm fairly sure the reason snow globes are band has little to do with this considering that the resulting explosive is no longer a clear liquid and it would be impossible to both smuggle the other required ingredients and create the mixture. At best they are banned because ethylene glycol is a flammable liquid, although I would personally like to know how.... More
