How would you green the economy?
The Obama administration launches a plan to green the recovery. Now it's your turn to be heard.

Vice President Joe Biden has a new item on his to-do list. On Friday, President Obama asked Biden to lead a task force focused on middle-class economic issues, specifically well-paying jobs linked to a cleaner environment.

And they're asking for ideas from around the country. The task force includes a web site where interested individuals can submit ideas.

MNN wants to get a jump on that conversation. How would you green the recovery? How can the U.S. create jobs that pay well and clean up the world around us? What creative ideas might the new administration try out?

Send us your thoughts and we'll broaden the discussion.

By doing everything possible and get people working on installing numerous windfarms as well as solar farms and replace the coal generators and eventually the nu-clear generators and make use of bio-gas rather than allowing it to escape into the atmosphere.

A bit off the wall perhaps, however..... The quick idea is to use Dirigibles as man made clouds. They could be huge. They could be covered with solar cells to gather and store solar energy. They would float above the earth and act as a reflector during day time so that they could cut down on sunlight hitting the earth. The would be solar/self powered. They could be filled with hydrogen which they could manufacture and store and deliver to where it is needed. They could also be used to transport
.... More
water gathered from clouds over the oceans and delivered as rain to places where it might be needed. Being manufactured with the new nano-materials they could be very "green productive". This would give us a place to populate that would be in three dimensions around the world and help relieve the population concentrations and displacement from global warming. They could be used as science platforms and for communications services as a compliment to satelites. Not wanting to handicap the idea it might also be possible to actually manufacture them in the sky and have them "bud off of a factory ship robotically almost in a biological way". The cost would be minimal, achievable and incremental.

You go around in every community and what do you see on the sides of the streets most of the time? Trash! Yes we send prisoners to clean up but its not a constant thing and they only pick up around certain areas. What about those areas that get left behind? Who's taking care of those? Certainly not the community mambers!

Small wind- and solar-power energy units for the home could help to cut reliance on foreign oil, lower the strain on the U.S. power grid, and put people to work. Wind units, such as the small "Power Ball" from the Netherlands or the qr5 from Britain, or home solar units could be approved by the U.S. DoE and be eligible for a coupon, just like we're doing with the digital converter boxes. Jobs would be created as the need for qualified installers went up. Imagine a team of contractors installing
.... More
small wind turbines in backyards, or solar panels on roofs. The number of contractors could be significant, depending on the amount of money eligible for the program. If the government was serious about it, they could purchase the units outright in bulk, cutting out the need for people to do the legwork and be charged a higher price. A citizen could register, log into a secure website, select a product for installation, and then only pay costs for setup (through the authorized contractors).

Over the past few years major corporations have been "stepping on their poncho", meaning that they have created their own problems. Now we (the taxpayers of the US) are expected to bail them out, meanwhile they are laying us off in droves. So we have a larger outgoing of tax money and at the same time we have a minimizing of incoming tax money. Although I generally don't subscribe to the idea that the government should create jobs or work, I do believe that in current economic struggle their can
.... More
be exceptions. Here is why: - American auto makers have not gotten on the green bandwagon, and if they have it is only because their backs are to the wall. - American farmers have not gotten on the organic bandwagon, and if they have, their future looks a bit grim at the moment. - American financial institutions have made bad decisions in the mortgage industry and related areas. - All in all, this comes down to corporate greed. Don't get me wrong, I believe that corporations should make money, a good profit even. But when the almighty dollar is waved in their face their directions turn toward getting as much money as they possibly can. Where they need to have a balance. A balance of making a profit, being ethically responsible to their employees, the environment and to the US as a whole. - I believe that the government can step in and offer opportunities to new or small business to fill the gaps that current companies have consciously ignored. Areas like: - Organic foods - Clean energy - and not just one area but many, why should the US put all it's energy expectations in a single basket. - Clean/Green automotive technology - this IS the future, ignoring will only cause more problems for us Overcoming obstacles: The government is not perfect either. For that matter they have let lobbyists control the governance on things, and as a result the governance makes it very difficult to small businesses to get in the game or even survive. The government needs to change much of it's legislation to get out of it's own way and the let the people help the process of recovery. That's my 1 cent, still working on the second cent!

2,000,000 gallons of gas per day? Probably much more. Synthesizing the same quantity of Hydrogen Peroxide would require extraction of Hydrogen from Natural Gas, synthesis, and distribution-about 2,000 jobs minimum-but no transportation costs from the oilfields and no distillery. Remarkable! Each state connected to the Natural Gas pipeline could potentitally be a energy producer independent of wind, nuclear, or coal. Ravings of a lunatic? Probably, but then it was a lunatic that got us to this point,
.... More
probably more than one. Can't run cars on peroxide-true in the present condition only. My opinion of the reciprocating engine is as common as it is unwanted. Turbines need love too! And then what about the hazards involved? Ladies and gentlemen, Look around you.

Nobody likes a government that picks winners, but we've seen what Laissez-Faire economic management has wrought. Too much potential investment seed capital is sitting on the sidelines, waiting to be told what to do. Our government should create guarantees that investment in green technology will be given a green light, through matching funds, tax credit incentives, domestic job creation incentives, and credits that focus on the triple bottom line. In other words, if your product will reduce emissions,
.... More
replace fossil fuel use, demonstrate sustainable growth and cut pollution, you should be able to claim credits against corporate taxes. No more should government give tax cuts without forcing benefits in return.

here is the best green plan for America that could quickly and easily create around 2 million "green collar" jobs and dramatically reduce fuel consumption, global warming emissions, vehicular accidents, and petroleum imports. If we had mandatory full-service gas stations with pump attendants who could ensure that we maximize vehicle fuel efficiency and safety at our 200,000 gas stations nationwide, we could green this recovery. Much needed jobs could be spread across America within our pre-existing
.... More
infrastructure of gas stations. Pump attendants could constantly help drivers squeeze every drop out of every gallon of fuel sold in America and prevent countless breakdowns, accidents, injuries, and deaths by inspecting tires, belts, and hoses. Drivers and convenience store clerks would be protected from "carjackings" and robberies by the presence of pump attendants. Fuel savings would offset the wages of the pump attendants! This plan is a "win-win" deal for America!!! Self-serve fueling is a relatively new concept adopted in the 1970's that saved drivers around 5 cents a gallon after the OPEC embargo boosted fuel costs. Drivers were unprepared to properly maintain their cars. We drive without checking tire inflation or air filters or engine oil while ignoring the tragic results: increased breakdowns, accidents, injuries, deaths and emissions. Now is the time to return to full-service fueling!!! "AIR UP AMERICA" could jumpstart our economy by creating around 2 million jobs, while slowing global warming and preventing accidents and crimes. American drivers could save over a billion dollars weekly and cut petroleum imports by conserving fuel. Please consider this patriotic "quick-fix" that could create enough "green collar" jobs to stave off economic recession and show the nations of Earth that America is leading the way to combat global warming!!!

It is my belief that the answer to our dependence on oil is to offer the single occupant an alternative. Current thoroughfares are designed and built to accommodate small motor bikes up to 18 wheel semi-trucks. Most efforts to relieve congestion are aimed at high-occupant vehicles when the vast majority of vehicles (90+%) carry one occupant. If the effort was focused on the single occupant the impact would have a greater result. I propose designing and building single occupant vehicles (
.... More
sov's) and sov lanes. The sov would be designed to carry only the operator. It could run on electricity and possibly weigh less than 200lbs. The sov lane would have a power source so the battery could be smaller as once the sov reaches the sov lane power would be provided to power the sov and recharge the battery. The sov lane could be smaller than current thoroughfares and where space is at a premium the sov lane could be suspended over existing thoroughfares using light weigh concrete. It is likely once the sov and sov lanes are in operation and the conversion in place, the current thoroughfares would be plenty adequate to carry the remainder of traffic far into the future. Now, as we need to grow for the future we will be growing smaller and smarter. A gross mis-proportionate percentage of the fuel needed to propel current vehicles is needed to propel the vehicle instead of the occupant, therein lies the problem.

I recommend that we create companies that work nationally with banks on the financial institutions on the disposition of their single family foreclosed properties. What would make this unusual and possibly of interest to Obama is to develop a process to Green the foreclosures, making them more energy efficient and thus more affordable, livable and environmentally friendly.
