This iconic image shows Earth rising from the moon. It was taken on Dec. 24, 1968, during the Apollo 8 mission. As Command Module Pilot Jim Lovell noted, "The vast loneliness is awe-inspiring and it makes you realize just what you have back there on Earth." We have sent several missions to the moon since the first Soviet flyby in 1959. NASA sent the Ranger, Surveyor and Lunar Orbiters to prepare for the Apollo missions of the 1960s and 1970s.
