This image shows the moon's shadow on Earth as it passes between Earth and the sun during a 2006 eclipse. The ground shadow is referred to as the "umbral" shadow. Here it is seen moving across southern Turkey, northern Cyprus and the Mediterranean Sea. The image was taken from the International Space Station (ISS). The moon is in synchronous rotation with Earth, which means that it rotates once on its own axis in the same time that it travels once around Earth.
