Apollo 1, officially called Apollo/Saturn-204, was supposed to be the first manned mission of the Apollo lunar landing program. It included Command Pilot Virgil "Gus" Grissom, Senior Pilot Edward H. White and Pilot Roger B. Chaffee.
Instead of reaching the moon, the three crew members were killed in a Jan. 27 fire that also destroyed the command module. It was later determined that their deaths were the result of design and construction flaws.
