Humanity’s move into space has been called mankind’s greatest adventure. Certainly, it can be considered one of the most dramatic and triumphant.

This is particularly true of its early years, from Project Mercury’s single astronaut programs to Project Gemini’s maneuvers in space, and to Project Apollo’s flights to the moon. From Ham the space chimp; to Alan Shepard’s first trip into space; to the tragedy and sacrifice of Apollo 1; to Neil Armstrong’s first lunar steps; and finally to the last (to date) mission to the lunar surface, these are some of the great moments that took us from the Earth to the moon. (Text: Katherine Butler)
