Orange sun simmering
This image, taken in 2008 by amateur astronomer Ralph Encarnacion through a small telescope with a standard digital camera, shows a relatively quiet sun simmering. As NASA reports, it reveals the gradual darkening of the sun's edge caused by the absorption of cooler solar gas. Sunlight contains all the colors of the rainbow but appears in space to be white. On Earth, we see it through our atmosphere filter. This makes it appear orange or yellow to us.
