Should we be worried about Earth's magnetic poles reversing?
What will happen when north-pointing compasses make a 180-degree turn toward Antarctica? Will the continents tear themselves apart, or are we in store for much more mundane changes?

The end of the world as we know it could come in any number of ways, depending on who you ask. Some people believe global cataclysm will occur when Earth's magnetic poles reverse. When north goes south, they say, the continents will lurch in one direction or the other, triggering massive earthquakes, rapid climate change and species extinctions.

The geologic record shows that hundreds of pole reversals have occurred throughout Earth's history; they happen when patches of iron atoms in Earth's liquid outer core become reverse-aligned, like tiny magnets oriented in the opposite direction from those around them. When the reversed patches grow to the point that they dominate the rest of the core, Earth's overall magnetic field flips. The last reversal happened 780,000 years ago during the Stone Age, and indeed there's evidence to suggest the planet may be in the early stages of a pole reversal right now.

But should we really fear this event? What will actually happen when north-pointing compasses make a 180-degree turn toward Antarctica? Will the continents tear themselves apart, or are we in store for much more mundane changes?

Weak field
"The most dramatic changes that occur when the poles reverse is a very large decrease of the total field intensity," said Jean-Pierre Valet, who conducts research on geomagnetic reversals at the Institute of Earth Physics of Paris. [5 Ways the World Will Change Dramatically this Century]

Earth's magnetic field takes between 1,000 and 10,000 years to reverse, and in the process, it greatly diminishes before it re-aligns. "It's not a sudden flip, but a slow process, during which the field strength becomes weak, very probably the field becomes more complex and might show more than two poles for a while, and then builds up in strength and [aligns] in the opposite direction," said Monika Korte, the scientific director of the Niemegk Geomagnetic Observatory at GFZ Potsdam in Germany.

The scientists say it's the weak in-between phase that would be roughest on Earthlings.

According to John Tarduno, professor of geophysics at the University of Rochester, a strong magnetic field helps protect Earth from blasts of radiation from the sun. "Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) occasionally occur on the Sun, and sometimes hurtle directly toward Earth," Tarduno said. "Some of the particles associated with CMEs can be blocked by Earth's magnetic field. With a weak field, this shielding is less efficient."

The charged particles bombarding Earth's atmosphere during solar storms would punch holes in Earth's atmosphere, and this could hurt humans. "Ozone holes, like that over Antarctica (which today are due to an entirely different cause related to man) could form as solar particles interact with the atmosphere in a cascade of chemical reactions. These 'holes' would not be permanent, but might be present on one- to 10-year timescales — arguably important enough to be a concern in terms of skin cancer rates," Tarduno said. [Will Sunscreen Protect You from the Upcoming Solar Flares?]

Valet agrees that a weak magnetic field could lead to the formation of ozone holes. He wrote a paper last year proposing a direct link between the demise of Neanderthals, our evolutionary cousins, and a significant decrease of the geomagnetic field intensity that occurred exactly at the same period. (That time, the lead-up to a geomagnetic reversal appears to have been "aborted"; the field weakened but didn't end up flipping.)

Other scientists aren't convinced that there's a connection between pole reversals and species extinctions. "Even if the field becomes very weak, at the Earth's surface we are shielded from radiation by the atmosphere. Similarly as we cannot see or feel the presence of the geomagnetic field now, we most likely would not notice any significant change from a reversal," Korte said.

Our technology definitely would be in danger, however. Even now, solar storms can damage satellites, cause power outages and interrupt radio communications. "These kinds of negative influences clearly will increase if the magnetic field and thus its shielding function became significantly weaker, e.g. during a reversal, and it will be important to find mitigation strategies," she told Life's Little Mysteries.

One additional worry is that a weakening and eventual reversal in the field would disorient all those species that rely on geomagnetism for navigation, including bees, salmon, turtles, whales, bacteria and pigeons. There is no scientific consensus on how those creatures would cope.

Continental shifts?
Many of the disaster scenarios associated with geomagnetic pole reversals in popular imagination are pure fantasy, the scientists said. There definitely won't be any break-up or shift of the continents.

The first proof is the geologic record. When the last pole switch happened, "no worldwide shifting of continents or other planet-wide disasters occurred, as geoscientists can testify to from fossil and other records," said Alan Thompson, head of geomagnetism at the British Geological Survey.

The scientists explained that changes in the Earth's liquid core happen on a completely different distance and timescale than convection in the Earth's mantle (which causes Earth's tectonic plates to shift, moving the continents). The liquid core does indeed touch the bottom of the mantle, but it would take tens of millions of years for changes in the core to propagate up through the mantle and influence the motion of the tectonic plates. In short, "there is no evidence from the geological past and in my opinion also no conceivable method that magnetic reversals could trigger Earthquakes," Korte said.

Sooner or later
The geomagnetic field is currently weakening, possibly because of a growing patch of reverse-alignment in the liquid core deep beneath Brazil and the South Atlantic. According to Tarduno, the strength of Earth's magnetic field "has been decreasing for at least 160 years at an alarming rate, leading some to speculate that we are heading toward a reversal."

The reversal might happen, or it might be aborted — Earth is too complex a system for scientists to know which outcome to expect. Either way, the process will drag on over the next few thousand years, giving us time to adjust to the changes.

with a pole shift the pressures under the plates would shift.. that means more earthquakes.. more volcanoes and more freak weather.. that added pressure could move land masses.. India hit asia 65 mph.. that was no oops the plates released pressure.. something caused the pressure under the plates to shift directions..

The greater the mass of ice on the Antarctic the greater pressure into the Earths crust affecting the internal gyroscopic fields and creates a fluctuating climate system because of heat released but the whole structure is the varying fields of influence is so very complex There are so many a varied unknowns within the whole matter of magnetic fields but one wonders if a variation affects the DNA of species because we are all magnetic fields Does a variation in field strength affect

blood in animals for eg is an interesting idea at least. but for humans to actually think they will control a climate well that is insane given the magnitude of all the variables

I believe that the earth is due for a magnetic pole reversal since it has not had one for the past 780000 years. But by the time solar flares strike the earth in the event of a weak magnetic field , we would have discovered ways of shielding ourselves from the harmful effects of the sun's radiation.

The magnetic energy of our solar system changes with the course our Sun takes through the galaxy, when a reversal occurs and creates a weakening of our defenses, we will feel this as a planet and individuals, because we are all magnetic energy, however we always feel this energy whether it flips or not. This is why we will not necessarily notice a difference that we are aware of, but the Earth itself will not flip. It most definitely will cause changes in the rotation of the planet and the surrounding
.... More
planets will be affected also. I suspect whatever scientist think about our past history is hypothesis that have no way of being verified, therefore, not to be trusted as complete truth. When this energy changes and the rotation is affected it most definitely will cause the solar energy to increase and the water will rise and fall and land will rise and lower in different areas, earthquakes will increase, volcanoes will erupt and the way the other planets influence Earth will also increase these changes, However, the time frame for this to occur is not bound by a 24 hour clock on Earth, it is bound to universal time which we have no control over to begin with. All any of us can do is remember these very important words to live by everyday: Give me the ability to accept the things I cannot change ( people, places, things ), the courage to change the things that I can ( me ) and the wisdom to understand the difference. Be at peace with who you are no matter the situation that presents itself, love your fellow energy ( plants, animals, bugs, reptiles, humans ) and do your part to make this world we do live in a better place, so that when the natural events do take place we will all be better prepared spiritually. peace and love to all.

Why scientists the ones from NASA has example already knowing anything about Earth? Must not having any problem; it’s in very good shape maybe nothing going to happened, already one only country wants all, maybe could be possible. Everybody knows one liter of water when frozen weights less, has example 100 liters of water will be the same of 100 kilograms, but when frozen the weight will be less 800 grams. But those measurements it’s fresh water , the Ocean water have salt is heavy . One kilogram
.... More
equal to 1000 grams. The Antarctica have more ice than the Arctic, even so the top have melt more than the bottom. Very hard now ; to do any calculation, to do with weights. A.Oscar

I have never read/heard any scientist put forth some form of thought relating to the amout of oil we suck out of the earth's bowels!? Surely there must be some unbalance in the earth's structure? Secondly, reversal of the poles might be a good thing the continents would also shift, perhaps the deserts become oceans again and the Western world have the control of the great suck-offs that at present have made millionairs of once nomadic tribes! I cannot see and endless supply of this black gold which
.... More
must have a cut-off point,. I am of the opinion one need not worry about the extra millions of humans populating an already groaning planet at some future date, much of the sustainable resources we humans rely on will have run out and of course, there must be some defects in the planet's mechanism, floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, droughts, lawlessness and the utter nonsense and preposteries mouthings of millionare Evangelists with their millions of foolish people keeping them and their families in wonderful luxury!! I would be considered if I they that perhaps their G--D does control the weather!!? In fact we have some of these 'nutters' who can tell you 9/11 and Katrina are G...D's visitations a a wake-up call!!!!

earth has gone through several changes in the past......bt at that time we were not so advanced and we were not depleting the environmrnt so the enviromental changes will also play sum role during the pole shift

Worry never solved anything. This is just a natural phase in the planet life. Mankind, much like the planet is not at the center of all things. Enjoy the ride. And should you die, well that's okay too.

The Earth's magnetic field is _not_ due to permanent magnetism as you imply. (The ambient temperature increases with depth, and soon passes the Curie point at which permanent magnetisation is impossible.) The Earth's magnetic field is due to the flow of electrically conducting material. This forms convection currents that are 'twisted' by the Coriolis force due to the Earth's rotation (much the same way as weather patterns in the atmosphere). This creates a 'dynamo' effect, which produces magnetic
.... More
energy from the energy of the motion of the fluid. This is a complex dynamic mechanism which can operate just as well with either magnetic field polarity - hence 'random' flips can, and do, occur.

if your a believer in GOD and his works then you must know that through him all things are possible. will the world end? I don't know but, i do believe that we as humans we will be the cause to our own destruction. if you look around you and all over different parts of the world humans are living lawless we are applying wrong things to ways of living. if u continue to add something bad to what was to be good eventually its going to give in this is natural. so you do the math you do good then good

comes out you do bad then bad comes.

RE: Bobby
You are joshing us but reality/science are very complicated - I dislike FOX news because it covers complicated issues - I watch CNN because they simplify the economic-political issues so a five year old can understand them. As this discussion shows, there are a lot of perceptive adults and a lot of five-year olds masquerading as adults.

Dont worry if your speakers play the music backwards.
You also will be doing everything backwards.
The world will move backwards.
Nobody will know tht they are moving backwards.
LIFE WILL BE LIKE THAT.
SO NOTHING TO WORRY.

The last known cataclysmic, species-ending event eliminated the dinosaurs. We know that the earth has experienced other similar experiences, previously, so we should expect that such would occur again. However, this would be the first time it would happen while human life exists on earth. Yes, we should be worried! I believe that much of the earth would be inhospitable to human life for a very long time.

Well, the dinosaur event may not be as 'cataclysmic' as some think...  There's plenty of evidence that it wasn't a sudden wipeout triggered by an asteroid, though the Chicxulub strike (and others) certainly won't have helped.  Huge magma outpourings (over hundreds of thousands of years) in the Deccan Traps are also hypothesised to be linked to the extinctions. We tend to think of 'sudden' events as taking place overnight, or in a short period by human timescales.  In geological terms, 10,000 years

is an eyeblink, remember!

Who cares? Whatever the results of this possible/probable event there is absolutely nothing we can do about it so why all the concern? Like it or not **it happens.

With all due respect, not everybody is concerned about it. I believe I may speak on behalf of others when I say it is sort of a fascination. There is nothing we can do about it. However, many websites have different speculations regarding what may or may not happen when these particular types of events occur. Educating yourself on the possibilities isn't ridiculous. Plus it is interesting to read about. Clearly it caught your eye, 'eh? :)

So, if the Earth's magnetic poles are produced at the core(s) by differential rotation, and the poles are moving rapidly, then it would follow that the Earth's core(s) are being attracted by a passing object.
Now, what on Earth could that be?

In geological terms, the main poles (the dipole component of the field, which is essentially like a bar magnet) stay pretty close to the geographic poles: they don't wander down to the equator, or anything like that. They _do_ diminish, such that the remaining bit of the field (the non-dipolar secular field) is the only bit left around for a while (that's what's being discussed here), and then they reform themselves with the opposite polarity. It's not that there's anything tugging the poles off-axis:
.... More
it's simply that the mechanism creating the field is in itself chaotic. Though our knowledge is incomplete, some models of the field use what's called a self-reinforcing dynamo (or a pair of them), which can generate all of the properties we see in the real field, including the geologically sudden reversals. But it all happens in the core: nothing outside is affecting it to any large extent.

You should be more worried about science that doesn't know why the current magnetic field is so weak or why there are reversals.
And maybe you should be worried about what lies at the Galactic Plane, or what is going on with the Sun coming up lame.

We should be more worried about the flaws in our education system seeing as how so many people buy into this nonsense about crossing the galactic plane causing calamities on Earth. I've got some magic beans you can buy if you are interested.
