its called alleycropping. Its been around for years and nothing new.
Growing crops between the rows of trees.
Planting legumes (nitrogen fixing beans) between the rows of trees gives the trees a natural nitrogen fertilizer they can utilize as well as providing a bean that you can eat such as soybean, peanut or other.
Its just a way a farmer can utilize the land to the max and not use chemicals at the same time.
Again its nothing new.
