Sadly, several college textbooks state that only turtles come close to beating human longevity...not true!
And if you consider plant life, hello redwoods!

I don't know how true this is...I've read reports some scientists believe sharks like the great white could live 1000 or more years.

Well done! Such ashame about oil spills, not just BP, but the oil spill while Egpyt ruined and now another 17 islands off the coast of China. Live animals have no chance not only about oil spills, but what about the earth and all people posions spray and use. Hey! and let not forget the great hero of sports fishermen proudly show the highest catch (fish breeders in the future for hundreds of years old).

I just wanted to say I found this to be quite interesting. I knew about some of these animals, but to actually have a list and check things out for myself from there is amazing. Thanks!

Interesting and educating article. I hope that all these amazing animals are protected by law and not being used for human profits.

Factual and thought provoking without being overly sensational. Nicely written as well.

Older than your grandma

There are tortoises alive today that were 25 to 50 years old when Charles Darwin was born. There are whales swimming the oceans with 200-year-old ivory spear points embedded in their flesh. There are cold-water sponges that were filter-feeding during the days of the Roman Empire. In fact, there are a number of creatures with life spans that make the oldest living human seem like a spring chicken in comparison. Here's our list of the 10 animals with the longest life spans — and there's even an immortal animal. (Text: Bryan Nelson)
