Turritopsis nutricula jellyfishThis species of jellyfish might be the only animal in the world to have truly discovered the fountain of youth. Since it is capable of cycling from a mature adult stage to an immature polyp stage and back again, there may be no natural limit to its life span. Because they are able to bypass death, the number of individuals is spiking. "We are looking at a worldwide silent invasion," says Dr. Maria Miglietta of the Smithsonian Tropical Marine Institute.

They forgot Keith Richards and Ozzy Osbourne. Every time I see one of them I'm like, "What?? He's still alive???"
Thanks for letting us share, had a four year old with many questions he had gotten a small jellie sting at Tybee Island
Very interesting! I knew that this is an amazing creature, but that what a jellyfish is the fountain of youth? Most jellyfish undergo two distinct life history stages (body forms) during their life cycle. The first is the polypoid stage, when the animal takes the form of a small stalk with feeding tentacles, In the second stage, the tiny polyps asexually produce jellyfish, each of which is also known as a medusa .... But we certainly do. Why are we bashing everyone's grammar? Who cares? As far as the jellyfish goes, obviously they were here long before we were. They did not just spring up overnight. There are plenty of checks and balances in the natural world to keep their population just as it should be. Its human intervention that throws things out of wack.
Time Lord Jellyfish!
Right?!
...how very few comments in regards to this story actually have anything to do with the story! Also, if someone does the (gasp!) occasional typo, just keep in mind that everyone makes mistakes and this should be a webpage of learning rather than being overly negative towards others.
This is insanely cool. Hopefully we can evolve to this point one day.. and keep our ability to reproduce in check :)
If we evolve to that point of immortality, mother earth will be finished.
Sooner or later we may have to cull thse jellyfishes. Else they will gobble up the planet.
don't forget about the food chain... as well as accidental jellyfish deaths due to blunt force trauma and "wrong place, wrong time" re: fishing and bomb tests
anti ageing coming soon? no jelly fish were harmed in the making of this comment
precisely my thought
well, it's not so surprising to hear that a jellyfish has the ability to regenerate its whole body, thus defying old age since we have a lot of organisms that "almost-defy" old age. however, the writer implied that this jelly fish, due to its ability to regenerate, has the power to be immortal which is of course justifiable since jellyfish has no known formidable foes, only those natural predators
My Grandma lived to be 186 years old!!! And my Grandpa Lived to be 151
bull**** !!
Were they sea turtles?
I understand that they may be able to live forever. But do we have an age on at least one of them. i mean we have a an age on every thing else on the list......
Well, it can ineed bypass the aging process which is so awsome in itself but I dont think it can avoid getting diseases, and not to mention those that actually eat the thing. It may live forever in a controlled environment though. Now that i think about it, its a pretty cool pet to have.

Yeah, if your worried about your kid getting upset when a goldfish dies.. Just get them that jellyfish. >.<
It's The Doctor!!!
Yeah
How fast is it's reproductive capability?? If it's fast and numerous, and can reproduce for all it's life, we can change our meal's main course to such jellyfish!!
Well they're only 4-5 mm long so they would be hard to eat
