Recovery efforts are still underway nine months after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill covered white sandy beaches with black tar, wrecked havoc on the economic health of coastal communities and destroyed the natural habitats of coastal wildlife.

Millions of gallons of oil remain in the Gulf, and according to the SELC, the possibility of future spills on the scale of the Deepwater Horizon tragedy will loom over the region until systematic reform of oil industry practices and government policies are firmly in place.
