Pictured here are fires in the coastal province of Santa Elena, Ecuador, and the east inland province of Guayas. This image, which was taken on Nov. 18, 2011, uses the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument aboard NASA's Aqua satellite. The fires are in red. The MODIS instruments are onboard both the Aqua and Terra satellites. They scan the planet around four to five times a day, recording fire details as never before. NASA credits the MODIS instruments with mapping the global distribution of fire with the highest accuracy in the history of fire watching.
