As mentioned, brush fires were a serious issue in Australia in 2009. This false-color image was taken by the MODIS system aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite on Feb. 23, 2009. Using shortwave and near-infrared light, the image shows the burned areas in brick red, while the areas of pink indicate open flame. These deadly brushfires, among the worst fires to plague Victoria, were blamed on high temperatures, low rainfall and dry winds. Experts say that climate change contributed to the conditions that resulted in this destruction.
