Twitchell Canyon Fire, Utah
This false-color image was taken from NASA’s Terra satellite on Sept. 29, 2010, after a summer lighting strike in Utah burned 44,000 acres in the Fishlake National Forest. As many as 500 firefighters battled the flames that were only 30 percent contained at the time of this photo. While vegetation appears red, bare land appears in shades of tan and pale grey, burnt areas are charcoal-toned, and water appears blue. The deeper the shade of charcoal, the more intense the burn.
