Wallow Fire, Arizona
This false-color image shows the Wallow Fire in eastern Arizona on June 21, 2011. The patches of unburned forest are bright red, a subtle contrast to slightly darker areas where flecks of black indicate burning. The fire was alleged to have been started by two campers who failed to properly extinguish their campfire, and it destroyed as many as 538,000 acres in eastern Arizona, as well as 32 homes. This photo was created by the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on the Terra satellite.
