The Mayan calander is just that a clock that has predicted the seasons states of the moon and planets. In fact it has not faulterd for over 3,000 years the accurate predition of solar and lunar eclipses. It does not mention the "end of the world" it mentions great change and seasons shifting. If you doubters would study a little more you would understand that there have been civilization with technologies beyond our present day. There are ruins off the coast of Japan that have monolithic slabs.... More

I am not one to dismiss the beliefs of other regardless of whether I agree, but I do understand one thing for sure. Eventually the ability to maintain life on the planet Earth will dwindle and disappear altogether, and only if we can cast of the petty self-centered ideology that our species has so easily clung to, can we find salvation. If we hope to propel our existence into the boundless future we must cooperate on a global level in achieving more then just a bit of space exploration. We must.... More

Learn how to type and how to properly spell words. Spelling "it's" with a "z" is in absolutely no way a better or faster way to spell. You're a student...prove it.

Ancient Human Female ‘End of Times’ prediction: Man will cut all the trees down, the wind will blow the topsoil off of all the lands turning the planet into a baren desert, and only the insects and smaller animals will survive.

OMG this is silly! We could also all fart at once and die of methane poisoning. All this Mayan calendar 2012 stuff is total crap; could we maybe expend the energy on solutions to problems rather than doomsaying?

The most obvious (and realistic) end to our world as we know it will be the next ice age. There's plenty evidence to show it will come regardless of the CO2 levels.

They Mayan calendar ends in 2012, and our calendar ends every year on December 31. Just as we celebrate January 1st of the new year, the Mayans will celebrate year 1 of their new calendar. That's what a Mayan told me while I was in Tulum, Mexico this past summer. The Mayans didn't know the date for the end of the world; they only knew the day their calendar would end and begin anew.

Looking at these photos is hard knowing we have so much work to do in order to heel both our planet and it's inhabitants. I try to keep a positive attitude, and live a life of consumption that is in line with the hope for a better future. Recently, I came across a company called falling whistles who brings awareness and activism on behalf of children trapped in what seems to be a never ending war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Im mexican and ive met a lot of mayan's trust me they all have diff. Opinions. I believe that the world wont end as such, but it will end as we know it, not by nuclear or any other but by a higher level of consciousness, hence we will simply begin to enhabit earth diferently :D

Maybe the Mayans meant to end their calendar by saying that December 21, 2012 is the end of the Mayan millennium, just like how 2000 was the new millennium for the solar calendar. The world did not end in the year 2000, so then why should the world end in the year 2012?

No god has ever produced a single drop of needed rain or stopped a single drop of unneeded rain yet the religionists always give credit to their god whenever a drought or flood ends. But NOTICE!: the only give credit to THEIR god and not to the other guy's god!

When there are no labs or scientific equipment running... what will save you then? When there is no communication or technology or electricity, what will save you? Some of the most intelligent and accomplished Scientists in history have believed in God.

And plenty of accomplished and intelligent scientists believed in OTHER magic skymen too, not just that particular "God". Doesn't make their scientific accomplishments any meaningful. Their gods are still meaningless fantasy.

Why do people always look to religion for answers when religion is based on hearsay... look to science as it is based on fact. Whether the world ends in 2012 or not, religion won't save you, science will.

Humans have been creating gods for hundreds of thousands of years to explain that which they don't understand. It boggles me that we can't just say "it's ok not to know." Science is working on discovering the truth about many things, but many answers are centuries away. To create a fantasy to give us comfort about unknown things is irrational, unreasonable thinking.

Science is only a tool, which in the hands of selfish people has created more unnatural disasters than one could count. Example: G.E. designs a cost cutting, shielding-reduced nuclear reactor and calls it safe...how safe are they now? Not to mention all the buried nuclear waste that is lurking everywhere.

REALLY? 10/21/2011 15:09 PM

Ok, according to your rationale I can say since "god" created man and thus man has "created" science. God has indirectly created science thus making your point invalid and moot. Hitler was not an invention of science and destroyed the lives of millions. Don't you think "god" would want us to learn and find out the truth of our coming to be? Put down the bible and open your mind...

SciFi Intellect 10/21/2011 22:10 PM

For the uninformed, science is merely a restatement of what human beings (that would be you ...) have sensed about their 'physical' surroundings. You of course have no concept or an open mind to further investigate what may be science. Obviously, 'real' scientists must have an open mind for things that may not fit their own paradigm of what should or could be (i.e. thinking outside the box is crucial and logic may not always dictate a solution to the scientific question(s) being asked).More

When has anything been proven? How do you prove something doesn't exist? And why trash someone else's beliefs? Believe what you will. This is one Christian who wont try to convert you or argue with you. You'll simply learn the truth when you die.

AMEN to your comment. I agree 100% and if people would just read the BIBLE and try to understand it, there would be less confusion out there. Our earthly things are nothing compared to what we have waiting for us in Heaven with our Heavenly Father. We must all put our faith and trust in the Lord Jesus CHRIST. He is the only way. He is truly our rock and He will never leave us, all we need to do is get down on our knees and pray and as Him for forgivness. The world is going to end, as we know.... More

Road to destruction

You may not believe the world will end on Oct. 21, or with the Mayan calendar in 2012 or that mankind will simply make the planet uninhabitable, but if popular movies and books are any indication, there must be a lot of people who believe the world is ready for its final bow. You may subscribe to a religious End of Days doctrine, but when it comes to the planet's fate, only one thing is for certain: All good things must come to an end.

There’s little agreement on exactly how this will happen, but there are plenty of theories. Here’s a look at 12 of the most popular ones and the science — or lack of it — behind them. (Text: Laura Moss)
