Bhola Island

Over half a million Bangladeshi people were displaced in 2005 after water permanently submerged half of Bhola Island. Massive floods in the months and years before had contributed to the severe erosion and subsequent overflow of surrounding rivers. Now many of the former residents are living in the slums of mainland Dhaka, which in recent years has served as a makeshift home for citizens of the flood-prone coastal areas in the country.
